Introduction

This device works by reducing the capacity of the stomach by placing a balloon via the mouth under endoscopic guidance. The balloon then gets filled with fluid. The balloon’s capacity is between 600-800 cc. The Balloon must be removed 6 months at the latest.

Indications

• Not fit for laparoscopic and / or open surgery.
• Overweight but not obese.
• Very high BMI as an adjunct to laparoscopic bariatric surgery.

Preoperative Instructions

Careful consideration as this option is not effective for the long term. Dr. Daoud would be more than happy to guide you to the best option for you.

Procedure

The procedure is performed as a day procedure under general anesthesia.

Postoperative Instructions

The nausea and vomiting after the procedure can be sever enough to warrant removal of the balloon. Usually strong medications are given to help you get through this immediate postoperative period.

Risks

• Severe nausea, vomiting, and hiccough.
• Bleeding.
• Migration which requires emergency surgery.
• Failure.
• Ulceration.
